My Story
Living Many Lives, Forever Collecting Skills
When I was a teenager, I convinced myself I was only good at two things: English and Math class. While those subjects were highest on my report card, I ended up believing I couldn’t handle technology or science until post-college. Graduating from university gave me the freedom to explore whatever I wanted to learn, and boy, did I explore everything. I worked through psychology, anthropology, spirituality, and marketing to name a few. To say I learned a lot would be an understatement. I read over 40 books in a year on various subjects, becoming a respected member in several niche groups.
Technology was never the plan for my career. I used to joke I had an English degree because I only understood paper. While I knew how to use Microsoft Suite for school purposes, that was the extent of my skill level. Self-doubt is a powerful thing and mine limited my ability to learn anything more than literature for nearly a decade. That changed in 2016 when I decided to try something new: being a professional mermaid.
You’d think it would be a simple path.
Buy tail. Wear tail. Swim.
Nope. Not quite.
Suddenly my world involved learning how to craft silicone, breath hold techniques, and modeling while freezing in the ocean at 5am. My world became a collage of seemingly random knowledge, all to assist this new hobby. It no longer became a question of “could I” but “how can I.” Small things like wanting to save money on accessories became learning how to make jewelry. My designs were a hit in the community and my collections were selling out multiple times a year. Suddenly, I was in competition with far more experienced shops, and I was somehow crushing it. Through jewelry, I learned product photography, copywriting, resin molding, and client management. As the client base evolved, I shifted the company with it, changing designs to match. I learned what did and didn’t work for other shops and applied this knowledge to my own.
Sadly, with the decline in live events in recent years, I’ve since moved on from jewelry to seek out better opportunities. While I loved this creative venture, and still use it for my personal collection, it quickly became unsustainable. Seeing this, I switched my focus to Content Creation and Digital Marketing full time. I learned the importance of personal branding from my performance years, knowing how to craft a brand image and consistently keep to it. I build my personal brand on honest reviews of pop culture, friendly analysis, and my own satirical sense of humor. Suddenly my personality was the product on display, and it was a strange adjustment. Transferrable skills from my years in food service and retail meant I could handle the delicate dance with potential sponsors, knowing how to forge those relationships with vendors in a mutually beneficial way. I knew what my audience wanted and how to keep them happy while still allowing my creativity to take center stage. The ever-changing social media algorithms help keep things interesting, too.
While playing the influencer game, I’ve continued to seek out professional and personal development. I’ve handled office management, podcast formatting, event planning, Twitch streaming, photography, editing, and with community management on several platforms. I’ve since made myself an expert in the social media sphere. While others turned to TikTok to “go viral,” I learned the difference between views and conversion rates. The secrets to engagement and follower counts go beyond the number you see, and my relationship with new audiences speaks for itself. People think I just post a photo or video, but my job is more than that. Negotiating brand deals and collaborations, networking with other creators and shops, and responding to my audience take up more time than you’d expect. Even my photo edits take over an hour to complete!
To make things even more complicated, I taught myself to code in 2022 as a personal challenge. I wanted to prove to my younger self what I’m capable of now. After completing my digital marketing certification in record time, I use my knowledge to help others reach their potential. Focusing on small businesses, artists, and entrepreneurs, my skill list and job history allow me to adapt to any situation. Unlike other creators, I’m even happy to explain the crazy world of social media to beginners. My goal in life to help others become the best versions of themselves.
I’ve lived many lives, with some very interesting job titles, and I’m not stopping anytime soon.
